Platform guide
MT4 vs MT5 for Expert Advisors
Choose the platform your broker and workflow support. If you are starting fresh, MT5 usually gives a stronger testing and automation environment; MT4 remains useful for legacy brokers and existing systems.
| Area | MT4 | MT5 |
|---|---|---|
| Backtesting | Simple and familiar, but weaker multi-threaded testing | Stronger strategy tester, multi-currency and optimization workflow |
| Broker coverage | Still common with legacy forex brokers | Increasingly standard for forex, CFDs and prop-firm terminals |
| Language | MQL4 | MQL5 with richer event model and standard library |
| Best fit | Legacy accounts and MT4-only workflows | New EA development, deeper testing and modern tooling |
FxTT recommendation
Use MT5 when possible for new EA testing. Keep MT4 when your broker, VPS or existing indicators require it. Many FxTT paid tools support both platforms; each product page states compatibility.
